Common Dental Emergencies

Dental emergencies can take many forms, and knowing how to identify them is crucial for seeking timely treatment. Some of the most common dental emergencies we handle include:

    • Severe Toothaches: Persistent and severe tooth pain can indicate an underlying issue such as tooth decay, an abscess, or an infection. Immediate evaluation and treatment are essential to relieve pain and prevent the problem from worsening.

    • Knocked-Out Teeth: If a tooth is knocked out due to trauma, it is critical to seek emergency dental care as soon as possible. The chances of saving the tooth increase significantly if it is re-implanted within an hour of the injury.

    • Chipped or Broken Teeth: A broken or chipped tooth can cause pain, sensitivity, and risk of infection. Prompt treatment can restore the tooth’s function and appearance while preventing further damage.

    • Lost Fillings or Crowns: Losing a filling or crown can leave your tooth vulnerable to damage and sensitivity. Emergency dental care can replace the restoration and protect the tooth from further harm.

    • Abscesses: An abscess is a painful, swollen area caused by an infection in the tooth or gum. It can lead to serious complications if not treated promptly, so immediate care is essential.

    • Soft Tissue Injuries: Injuries to the lips, gums, tongue, or cheeks can cause significant bleeding and discomfort. Our team can provide the necessary care to manage the injury and promote healing.

What to Do in a Dental Emergency

Knowing what to do in a dental emergency can make a significant difference in the outcome. Here are some steps you can take while seeking emergency dental care:

    • Severe Toothaches: Rinse your mouth with warm water and gently floss to remove any debris. Avoid applying aspirin directly to the tooth or gum, as it can cause irritation.

    • Knocked-Out Teeth: Handle the tooth by the crown (top), not the root. Rinse it gently with water if it is dirty, but do not scrub it. Try to reinsert the tooth into the socket if possible, or keep it in a container of milk or saline solution until you can reach our office.

    • Chipped or Broken Teeth: Rinse your mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling. Save any broken pieces of the tooth and bring them with you to the dentist.

    • Lost Fillings or Crowns: Use dental cement or sugarless gum to temporarily cover the exposed area if you cannot see a dentist immediately. Avoid using adhesive substances like super glue.

    • Abscesses: Rinse your mouth with a mild saltwater solution to help reduce pain and draw out pus. Seek emergency dental care as soon as possible.

    • Soft Tissue Injuries: Clean the area gently with water and apply pressure with a gauze or clean cloth to stop bleeding. Use a cold compress to reduce swelling.

Preventing Dental Emergencies

Frequently Asked Questions About Emergency Dentistry

How quickly can I be seen for a dental emergency at Dental Partners of Creve Coeur?

When you call us with a dental emergency, our goal is to get you seen the same day. Dr. Singh and the team understand that emergencies don’t follow a schedule.  Pain is urgent, and waiting days for an appointment isn’t an option. Call us immediately at (314) 432-0960 and explain what’s happening. We’ll do everything we can to fit you in as soon as possible, assess the situation, and get you out of pain fast. The sooner you call, the sooner we can help.

What counts as a dental emergency? How do I know if I should call?

A good rule of thumb: if something hurts, broke, fell out, or looks wrong, call us. You don’t need to diagnose yourself before picking up the phone. Common emergencies we treat include severe or persistent toothaches, knocked-out or cracked teeth, lost fillings or crowns, dental abscesses, swollen gums, and soft tissue injuries to the lips, tongue, or cheeks. Some of these, particularly abscesses and knocked-out teeth, can escalate quickly if left untreated, so erring on the side of calling is always the right move. When in doubt, reach out.

My tooth was just knocked out. What do I do right now?

Time is critical. The best outcomes happen when a knocked-out tooth is re-implanted within an hour of the injury. First, handle the tooth by the crown (the visible top part), not the root. If it’s dirty, rinse it gently with water. Do not scrub or use soap. If you can, carefully reinsert it into the socket and hold it there. If that’s not possible, place the tooth in a small container of milk or saline solution, not tap water, to keep it viable during transport. Then call us at (314) 432-0960 immediately and head straight to our office at 11709 Old Ballas Rd, Suite 100, St. Louis, MO 63141.

I have a severe toothache. Could it be serious?

Yes, and it’s worth taking seriously. A severe or persistent toothache is rarely “just a toothache.” It often signals tooth decay that has reached the nerve, a dental abscess, or an infection that can spread if left untreated. Over-the-counter pain relief may temporarily dull the pain, but it won’t address what’s causing it. Rinsing with warm water and gently flossing can help clear any debris in the meantime, but the most important step is calling our office right away. Dr. Singh will evaluate the tooth, identify the root cause, and recommend the appropriate treatment, whether that’s a root canal, drainage of an abscess, or another procedure.

What is a dental abscess and why is it an emergency?

An abscess is a pocket of infection that forms at the root of a tooth or in the gum tissue, usually caused by untreated decay, a cracked tooth, or advanced gum disease. It typically presents as a throbbing toothache, swelling in the jaw or face, a bad taste in the mouth, and sometimes fever. It’s a dental emergency because the infection can spread to the jaw, neck, and in serious cases, beyond if not treated promptly. Treatment may involve draining the abscess, a root canal to remove the infected pulp, antibiotics, or in some cases, an extraction. Do not wait this one out. Call us immediately at (314) 432-0960.

I lost a crown or filling. Do I really need to come in right away?

It’s not quite the same level of urgency as a knocked-out tooth or abscess, but you should still contact us as soon as possible, ideally within a day or two. A lost crown or filling leaves the underlying tooth structure exposed and vulnerable to decay, temperature sensitivity, and cracking. In the meantime, dental cement or a small piece of sugarless gum can be used to temporarily cover the exposed area and reduce discomfort. Do not use super glue or other household adhesives. When you call us, we’ll assess how quickly you need to be seen and get you on the schedule.

Do you treat dental emergencies for new patients, or only existing patients?

We treat everyone. If you’re in pain and you’ve never been to our office before, you are still welcome to call us at (314) 432-0960. A dental emergency is not the time to be turned away because you’re not in our system. Dr. Singh will evaluate your situation, address the immediate problem, and if you’d like to continue your care with us going forward, we’ll get you set up as a new patient from there. We serve patients throughout St. Louis, Creve Coeur, Clayton, Ladue, and the surrounding communities.

Will my insurance cover emergency dental treatment?

In most cases, yes, at least in part. Most dental insurance plans include some coverage for emergency evaluations and urgent procedures, though the specifics vary by plan. What’s covered could range from the exam and X-rays to the treatment itself, depending on the nature of the emergency. If you’re uninsured or facing costs your plan doesn’t fully cover, we offer flexible payment options so that cost doesn’t stand between you and the care you need. Call us at (314) 432-0960 and we’ll help you understand your coverage and out-of-pocket costs before treatment begins.
